Minions: The Rise of Gru is a vibrant, colorful, loud hilarious mess. It’s fun to watch However, but there’s just too little happening simultaneously. One reason is that there are a lot of interesting characters but too little screen time to fully manage all of them. The result is that what are we left with? Honestly, there is a lot of screen time devoted to the yellow minions, who don’t have much to offer. They talk in bizarre absurd ways that appear to be logical when you’re paying attention, but in reality, why bother with their appearance when you’ve got an entire cast of “Vicious 6” characters? These appropriately named villains are the 1970’s villains who don’t get their due in this muddled animated film.
These are clever names, and we’re eager to see how the movie uses these names to its advantage, but it’s not going to happen. Instead, the film concentrates upon Gru (the voice of Steve Carell) and his efforts to join his “vicious” crew to no end. Additionally, Gru has those pesky minions with him, which distracts from an idea that could be an excellent idea if there were no minions in the picture. However, it is an action movie with minion characters. Therefore we must accept the things it offers us as viewers. Oh, well.
Gru, as well as the minions, are having their moments. Gru and his team go to see Jaws inside the theater and create an explosive to deodorize the theater so that they can go and watch the movie on their own. Hysterical. The film also has the opening credits, which are a tribute to the names of James Bond pictures. Very clever. Gru is informed that he will get a job interview job as a member of the crew that is vicious from self-destructing messages that come in the same way that Princess Leia first spoke to Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars from 1977.
