Patrick Hughes’s “Man From Toronto” is a throwback buddy comedy that mixes its snarky sense of humor and a pair of attractive leads. Everything about Teddy Jackson ( Kevin Hart ) screams screwup from the beginning.
Teddy, a soon-to-be-jobless employee at a small Virginia gym, is introduced through a series of hilariously cringe online videos. He stubbornly attempts to create the next big fitness sensation. His elastic resistance belt, TeddyBand, one of his stupid inventions, does nothing but slap him in his face. He designed a dodgy pull-up bar. It quickly collapses. It quickly collapses.
What happens when someone so inept is mistakenly identified as a highly-skilled assassin — the poker-faced Woody Harrelson — and accidentally teams up with him for a dangerous mission? It’s a huge, hilarious mess, with lots of bickering, FBI agents, and surly hitmen. Screenwriters Chris Bremner and Robbie Fox create a delicious dish using this familiar recipe. Hughes, “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” gradually pushes their basic plot toward the end.
The team delivers something watchable on the whole. There are playful nods and nods to many opposites-attract buddies flicks like “48 Hours,” “Trading Places,” and “Lethal Weapon” should also find a strong audience in streaming.
